ANTIOCH, California — Police on Saturday expanded their search to a property next to the home of a California couple charged with kidnapping a little girl 18 years ago as they looked for evidence linking them to other open cases in the area, including the unsolved murders of prostitutes.

Police in Pittsburg are investigating whether Phillip Garrido, whose home is in nearby Antioch, is linked to several unsolved murders of prostitutes in the early 1990s. Antioch police are also looking into unsolved cases but declined further details.

Officers from the Pittsburg Police Department, Antioch Police Department and the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department were on hand. The agencies say they are reviewing unsolved cases to determine if the Garridos are connected. Pittsburg Police, for instance, said they are looking into whether the Garridos are connected to a string of prostitution murders in that city in the early 1990s. The other agencies declined to discuss what cold cases they were reviewing.

Garrido lives next door to a relative of the girl and the girl regularly visited the relative. The victim of the 1970s attack said she was “shocked” that the man suspected of abducting Miss Dugard was the same one who had attacked her but relieved that he had been arrested.
She said: “I am overwhelmingly relieved. He’s a monster.”

Police investigating the kidnap of Jaycee Lee Dugard have widened their search for evidence to include a second property.
Phillip Garrido, who was arrested along with his wife Nancy, is understood to have been the caretaker of the neighbouring property, before its current owner, Damon Robinson, moved in in 2006.
A neighbour, Janice Deitrich, 66, said that Mr Garrido had access to the property because he would visit and help feed an elderly person who had lived in the house previously.
The authorities described the property in Antioch, California, as a crime scene but declined to elaborate.
Offices are looking for evidence linking the Garridos to other open cases in the area, including the unsolved murders of up to 10 women, including prostitutes.
