By that time, McReynolds was a justice on the Supreme Court, where he unwittingly laid the groundwork for Roe v. Wade. Understandably, he had to excuse himself from Diggs’ and Caminetti’s case.

People are stuck in that lifestyle. We get to know them on a very personal level.”

Sacramento police say among those rapes, is a cold case from Solano County.
On Thursday, Fairfield police got a DNA match from a rape that happened back in 1997, at a Fairfield mobile home park, matching Albert Povadora.
“I’ve very glad that the perpetrator was caught,” said Kathy Jennings, a resident of the retirement mobile home park, where that rape occurred 12 years ago.
Cops say the suspect broke into the trailer of a 65-year-old woman, then raped her.
“I’ve only lived here a little over three years, so that incident was before my time. But it’s scary to hear that,” she said.
And scary because police believe there still may be more victims out there.
In the most recent cases, cops say he targeted prostitutes, whereas years ago he simply broke into someone’s home.

For the past several years Elk Grove has tried with little success to combat the widespread practice by pot growers of renting vacant homes and filling them to the rafters with indoor drug gardens. City officials will likely confirm that it’s a whole lot easier to eradicate the practice before it starts than after the camel is fully inside the tent. Speaking of the cartels, do we really believe that legalizing marijuana for recreational use will cut the cartels out of the market? Did the mob leave Nevada because gambling and prostitution was made legal? A study by the state’s Board of Equalization predicts a 50% drop in price and a 40% hike in usage should the drug become legally acceptable. That is because the price of manufacture and distribution will drop dramatically; the current suppliers have proven very effective in dealing with competition from the less well armed, and disinclined to abandon a profitable enterprise for any reason. The state cannot cut them out.

Sunday is the National Transgender Day of Remembrance, a memorial to transgender homicide victims that was established in 1999. This year is the first year that it will be formally observed in Stockton, by the nascent Stockton Transgender Alliance.
Elena Kelly, the alliance’s director, said life still is very difficult for those who don’t fit into the culture’s binary notion of gender.
“Anyone who doesn’t fit neatly has a very difficult time, especially if they’re male to female,” Kelly said. “It’s OK for my sister to be a tomboy; it wasn’t OK for me to be girly.”
Dressed as a woman, Dibble called himself “Ariana,” just a consonant away from a sister, Adriana, the only member of his family with whom he shared his secret. A registered nurse, Dibble had been arrested a few times on suspicion of prostitution. When he was a teenager he had problems with drugs. His family attributes that now to confusion about his identity.

Thompson said civil forfeitures have been used in this country since Colonial times. They became in vogue again during Prohibition, when again the means of transport was forfeited, this time the vehicles.

“The idea is the legal fiction that the property itself commits a crime or that the property represents the proceeds of a crime,” she said.
Forfeitures have also been used liberally in the war on drugs, seizing fancy cars and jewelry and sometimes a family home. The law has been used in vice cases such as gambling and prostitution too.
