Sacramento Escorts: Opera Workshop performance of Philemon timely as Easter Approaches
Rarely performed, Philemon is a two-act musical with music and words by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones (better known for there creation of the musical, the Fantasticks.) The St. Mary’s University Opera Workshop opened the show, Thursday evening March 29th and concluded its run, Sunday afternoon, April 1st.
Set in the ancient city of Antioch in the year 287 A.D, the first act underscores the oppression of the time. Cockian (Joseph Sanchez) a clown, or “actor” as he refers to himself, shows his lasciviousness in quintessential Greek fashion. In trouble for decieving, lying and cheating others, he’s in desperate need of cash so he tries to persuade his longtime girlfirend, Kiki, to be a prostitute for the the highest bidder. Angered, Kiki (Elisha Bryant/Janelle Pierce) turns him in for all his crimes to Marcus, the Commander of the Roman Garrison (Jesus Garcia.) who had caught him for breaking curfew on another occasion, but had decided to let him go at the time.
