The tunnel under Folsom’s Sutter Street has received some attention recently (see story on front page of this week’s Telegraph).
Melinda Peak, of Peak and Associates in El Dorado Hills, said finding written history on the tunnel has been challenging.
She said it appears as though the tunnel started as drainage.
“There is a natural ravine there under Sutter Street,” Peak said.
According to Peak, the main tunnel dates back to at least before 1891.
Rumors abound, linking the tunnel to prostitution, smuggling alcohol during Prohibition and Chinese immigrants hiding from thugs.
“You get these stories about Prohibition tunnels, running alcohol from the river to the hotel, but no. There is nothing particularly exciting,” Peak said.
She said the tunnels are dangerous and should not be entered.
