St. John’s: New coach Steve Lavin sees nine seniors and nearly as many close losses and figures the team he inherits isn’t too far from returning to the NCAA tournament. It would be the first time since 2002 for a program that balances between the high expectations of history and the low points of recent years. Lavin has been an ESPN analyst since UCLA fired him in 2003.
Coach signings: Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon signed a two-year contract extension through 2017-18, and Louisville coach Rick Pitino agreed to a four-year extension through 2016-17. Pitino already was making $2.3 million a season, and his new deal will move up his $3.6 million loyalty bonus. Dixon was earning $1.6 million.
Oklahoma: The athletic department has opened an investigation after reports by TMZ.com that Tiny Gallon received money from a Florida financial adviser.
CBI: Virginia Commonwealth won the best-of-three College Basketball Invitational championship in two straight games, beating host Saint Louis 71-65.

Lawsuit dropped: Mike Pressler, the former Duke coach who was fired after a stripper falsely accused three players of rape in 2006, has ended his slander lawsuit against school officials, both sides said. Details weren’t discussed.
